We have a sneaking admiration for Britney Spears. What with feckless husbands, public breakdowns, a restrictive conservatorship by her father and the victim of appalling behind the scenes treatment as outlined in her biography she’s been through a lot in a very public way and seems to have found some well deserved peace. Her life therefore would appear top be ideal for a warts and all big screen treatment so it is no surprise that Britney the movie is in the works based on her 2023 best-selling memoir The Woman in Me.
Jon M Chu is attached to direct. Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land) is set to produce. With the singer posting on her social media, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with Marc Platt …..He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.” Quite who will play her is unknown but lets hope it does not become the farrago that the Madonna movie casting became before the whole project was dumped (although rumours are that it Is being resurrected are circulating).
The book was a huge hit selling 2.5 million copies in the U.S alone and the audiobook was the fastest-selling in publisher Simon & Schuster’s history and was Spotify’s top audiobook of 2023 too. The book was full of revelations and Justin Timberlake comes out of it in a particularly poor light.
Universal will be the studio behind Britney the movie who have had a successful run with musical biopics that have included the NWA film ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and the Emimem film ‘8 Mile’ which garnered a Best Song Oscar. They are also developing a Snoop Dogg biopic as well as a long gestating prince biopic too.
