Perhaps one of the lesser known DC villains is Clayface. Originally, he was portrayed as a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime. He has a body seemingly made out of clay and has appeared over the years in various films, series, animated works, video games and other forms of media. Well now he is to get a standalone film from a script by director Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) who will be helming the next Exorcist film. So who will direct the Clayface movie?
Well its going to be British director James Watkins whose recent remake of ‘Speak No Evil’ starring a excellent James McAvoy will be the helmer with DC co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves. Clayface is rumored to be a horror-thriller-tragedy, with the lead protagonist not expected to be portrayed as the notorious villain he’s known as in the Batman canon. Watkins could be the ideal man for such a project having given us the unrelentingly grim ‘Eden Lake’ that starred Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly as a couple terrorized by a group of youths led by Jack O’Connell. He followed it with the creepy film version of the play of the book, ‘The Woman in Black’ starring Daniel Radcliffe that did excellent box office business.
The film is budgeted at $40 million and the script is rumoured to be a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.
The Clayface movie has a 11th September 2026 release date.
