Based on the books by Cressida Cowell, the How to train your Dragon trilogy of animated films released from 2010-19 earned more than $1.6 billion worldwide at the box-office and in turn launched a further three spin-off TV series along with theme park rides and a live show. So it is little wonder that news reaches us of a live action How to Train your Dragon film.
The original ‘Dragon’ film takes place in the mythical Viking village of Berk and follows the adventures of a misfit teen named Hiccup who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless. He soon discovers there may be more to the creatures than he or his family assumed.
The Black Phone‘s Mason Thames and The Last of Us‘ Nico Parker are leading the project, playing Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the original) and Astrid (America Ferrera), respectively. This will be Parker’s second live-action adaptation of an animated feature, her first was Dumbo. But just announced is that Gerard Butler will reprise the father role of Stoick the Vast in the live-action remake that hails from original co-director Dean DeBlois. Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed the original animated trilogy earned a best Animated feature film Oscar nomination for each of the films is returning to write, produce and direct this new take.
This will mark the first Dreamworks animated feature to make the jump to live-action form with likely more on the way should it succeed. Marc Platt is producing the live-action movie which Universal will premiere in cinemas on June 13th 2025. Its highly likely that should a live action How to train your Dragon film prove to be another box office earner then we can expect more live action adaptations….which might even include Shrek!
