At one point director Robert Zemeckis could do no wrong with a string of hits that included Romancing the Stone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump, Castaway and What Lies Beneath and of course Back to the Future trilogy.But from 2015 he has helmed a string of string of flops that started with 3D film The Walk and had included a limp live action version of Pinocchio that went straight to streaming and his latest yet to be released in the UK, ‘Here’ is looking to go the same way. So he needs a hit and recently spoke about Back to the Future the musical although a sequel is NOT on the cards.
“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a Back to the Future 4, it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis said and went on saying that Universal has asked him if he was open to revisiting the Back to the Future universe, joking that the studio does it “every six months.”
“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical,” Zemeckis said. “Just like [Mel Brooks] did with The Producers. I would love to do that. I think that would be great.” Zemeckis said he talked to the film studio about the musical but said, “They don’t get it. So there’s nothing I can do.”
Its a surprise that the studio are not interested because a stage musical made its debut in 2020 in England before opening in Broadway in 2023 and the recent reboot of Mean Girls was a film of the musical of the film
