Before Trey Parker & Matt Stone, before Bobby & Peter Farrelly and before Zucker . Abrahams & Zucker the king of the near the knuckle comedy was Mel Brooks. A brilliant comic writer and director Mel Brooks returns to film making at 99 years old. And the film he will return in is a sequel to one of his own, Spaceballs that was released way back in 1987 and will see its sequel release in 2027 when Brooks will be 101.
The Star Wars parody will see Mel Brooks returns as the Yoda like character, Yogurt in a film that will see Josh Gad lead with other cast members yet to be announced. Described as, “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” the plot details also remain unknown. “Will & Harper” director Josh Greenbaum will helm the film with a script from Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez and Gad.
Brooks remains one of cinemas great comic writer/directors performers with The Producers (1967) winning him an Oscar – he is one of the few EGOT winners (Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, Tony ). And it was the 1970’s and a run of box office successes that saw him secure his reputation with films that included Blazing Saddles ( western parody) , Young Frankenstein ( classic monster film parody) , Silent Movie (a silent movie with only word spoken….by famed mime artist Marcel Marceau) and High Anxiety (a parody of Alfred Hitchcock films Psycho, The Birds and a whole load of others too) and all still stand up with the best of comedies today and arguably he paved the way for the comic writers/directors to follow.
