The gamble to continue the Predator franchise after the failure of 2018’s ‘The Predator paid off handsomely with the critical and commercial success of ‘Prey’ that saw the creature in an old world America and hunting down Native Americans and finding itself up against a worthy female opponent. The hugely positive reaction to Prey saw fans demand another film and following up the films success Trachtenberg gave us a short animated feature Killer of Killers and now a feature film where the ‘Predator Badlands’ director that takes us to the future where the predator now becomes the protagonist.
The new film sees a young Predator, Dek, outcast from his clan who then finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
We had the opportunity to chat with the Predator Badlands director about the film as he was fine tuning it ready for release on IMAX – the world premiere was in London on the BFI IMAX screen the biggest scree in the UK!). We got to chat to him about all aspects of the film including the casting of a new actor Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi to play the role as well as the amount of violence and the subsequent issue of getting the film past the censors. We also got to speak about the use of CGI for the predator instead of prosthetics. In addition we also got talk about just how Elle fanning was carried around like backpack by Dimitrius throughout the films shoot in New Zealand. It was a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes and Dan had a load of intriguing stories to tell us.
