Twenty years ago Robert Downey Jr was mooted to play Doctor Doom. Instead he ended up playing Iron Man which turned out pretty well for him appearing in ten Marvel films and earning a projected $500m – $600m – Quite how he’s supposed to live on that is anyone’s guess! But it was revealed over the weekend at comic-con where he made a bizarre almost Messianic appearance that he will be back as as the Villainous Doctor Doom so just how what is Robert Downey Jr fee to play Doctor Doom fee ?
Downey agreed to return to the MCU only if the Russo’s would direct as “they were the only ones he would work with.” So whilst the Russo’s are being paid $80m for the films Downey is apparently being paid significantly more . thought to be $100m+ Downey’s deal also has multiple perks including private jet travel, dedicated security, and a ‘trailer encampment’.
The Russo’s also have ‘performance escalators’ written into their contract when the film passes the $750 million and $1 billion thresholds.
The news that he is to play the villain has met with mixed reaction from fans with some calling it desperate whilst others call it inspired.

Shooting on the new “Avengers” kicks off in London in the second quarter of 2025.
