With the case in the US against Meta having now come to an unexpected end with the company agreeing to a big payout (though nowhere hear to what they might have had to pay of the case had drawn to its conclusion if they had lost) there’s now the teaser trailer for The Social Reckoning and it would seem to be an obvious awards contender.
Inspired by true events and the whistleblower who started the social media reckoning we’re seeing play out today, this Aaron Sorkin original screenplay is a companion piece to the hit film The Social Network and a true David and Goliath story. The film begins 13 years after the original film where Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

Cast is led by Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen with Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong
Jesse Esienberg who portrayed Zuckernerg in The Social Network (2010), declined to return to the role because he developed a negative opinion of the real Zuckerberg’s recent actions, and came to dislike being associated with him through his performance, being frustrated by encounters such as fans asking him to sign “I’m CEO, bitch” memorabilia in airports. Aaron Sorkin revealed that he spent three days trying to persuade Eisenberg to reprise his role. Jeremy Strong was cast instead.
Although Sorkin was in contact with Haugen while writing the script, he urged Madison to not imitate the inspiration for her role and ended up sending Haugen a letter shortly after production wrapped.
