Robert Eggers - What's next after Nosferatu?

With Nosferatu having become the most commercially successful film for the director earning $173m to date with praise from all quarters  including an Oscar nomination for the cinematography  what’s next for Robert Eggers after Nosferatu? Well at a recent Q&A it seems that he will be staying with monsters having co-written a 13th century based horror, ‘Werwulf’….and yes that is the way he’s spelling it!

Co-written with Sjon the story unfolds in 13th century England and is rumoured to have  dialogue that was true to the time period (anyone who has read The Canterbury Tales will know how this is going to sound and pity the actors who will have to learn it!)  It will also have translations and annotations as it uses Old English for the dialogue. Eggers said, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie and this is the darkest thing I have ever written, by far.”

Now if you’ve seen all his films to date you’ll know that he has never shied away from some pretty grim subject matter – The Witch’s satanic imagery, The Lighthouse’s descent in to madness and The Northman’s storming of a village and the horrific razing to the ground of a house of children and then of course there’s the stunning  transformation of Bill Skarsgard into Count Orlok himself in the title role along side a rumoured two thousand rats

so who knows what ‘Werwulf’ will contain but we’re guessing it wont be one for the kids. One thing is for sure that it will be as visually distinctive as all his previous films

So that’s what’s next for Robert Eggers after Nosferatu?
