Wicked Little Letters – BLU-RAY / DVD

Win 'Wicked Little Letters' on DVD starring Oliva Colman

The pairing of Oscar winner Olivia Colman with Oscar nominated Jessie Buckley was great casting for a film whose female leads the actors public personas are so well suited.  Wicked Little Letters BLU-RAY / DVD is based on a true story set in 1920s English seaside town Littlehampton that bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy.

Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. Written by Jonny Sweet an actor with several writing credits to his name that included TV comedy series ‘Chickens’ which starred Simon Bird & Joe Thomas of Inbetweeners fame and Wicked Little Letters is as sweary as that high school comedy. Helming the film is director Thea Sharrock perhaps best known for the tearjerker ‘Me Before You’ (reviewed HERE) but Wicked Little letters is far different. Co-starring Brit favourites Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Eileen Atkins, Joanna Scanlon and rising star Alisha Weir (Matilda, Abigail) there’s something innately entertaining  watching respected  Brit thespians getting all potty mouthed. At the centre of it is the mystery of whether Buckley’s character has been engaging in the 1920’s version of trolling but the film also lays bare the attitude of the patriarchy towards women most notably the female police officer who takes a deeper look into the ongoings

There’s a decent transfer of the film but the bonus features are thin with just three featurettes. True Story, Frenemies, and Trolling in the 20’s all of which are only a few minutes long and the True Story featurette especially deserved a fuller look into the whole saga that was even raised in Parliament at the time. What also would have been fun is perhaps a commentary with Colman, Buckley and maybe Sweet and Sharrock too.

But Wicked Little Letters is an enjoyable romp whose frequent profanities (often hilariously delivered with a straight face) are likely to shock fans of those nice English actors
