With the third film now on release all over the world the Deadpool and Wolverine record breaking begins!
It was expected to open to $160 million to $175 million in North America, which were already huge numbers for a movie with the restricted rating. Instead its earned $205 million in the US alone. The movie also shattered records for an R-rated pic on a global scale, opening to $233.3 million internationally from 55 materials markets for a worldwide start of $438.3 million! Breaking those figures down further IMAX contributed $36.5 million in Imax ticket sales, a July and R-rated record for the large-format exhibitor. The U.K. turned in a hefty $22.1 million, followed by Mexico with $18.7 million, Australia with $13 million and Germany and India with $10 million each.
Internationally the film has pushed Marvel’s MCU movies past the $30 billion mark in total worldwide ticket sales which means it is now the top-grossing franchise in history.
Deadpool and Wolverine record breaking saw the film becoming the top opening ever for Reynolds, Levy and Jackman and the fifth-biggest superhero launch. It’s also the biggest July opening of all time, the biggest opening of 2024 so far and the biggest launch since Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021.
Though Inside Out 2 has also performed spectacularly for Disney becoming the biggest ever earning animated feature currently on $1.5b but it would seem that this third Deadpool film will give it a run for its money possibly making it 2024’s biggest earner.
It will be a huge relief for Marvel / Disney with the superhero franchise seemingly back on track after a disastrous 2023 where two releases (Ant man and the Quantumania, The Marvels flopped badly with only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 was a critical and commercial success.
