Deadpool and Wolverine – REVIEW

Deadpool & Wolverine - together for the first time on film!

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s online banter bromance finally finds itself on to the big screen with Deadpool 3 or Deadpool and Wolverine as its actually titled. But here their superheroes are broken men. Rebuffed by his girlfriend  Vanessa and a hoped for memberships of the Avengers refused Deadpool now finds himself wearing a wig and selling second hand cars. And Wolverine is dead. At least it would seem that way because as Marvel’s fondness for the multiverse, which arguably began the decline of the superhero franchise, means that he does exist in many forms in alternate universes which we glimpse in a montage.

The relevance of this is that Mr Paradox (Matthew McFadyen channelling Richard E Grant towards end of the film) is an agent for the Time Variance Authority and has almost completed work on a Time Ripper device that will kill timelines and their waning anchor beings. It’s an obvious dig at the demise of Marvel films in 2023 and it is Deadpool who determines to bring one Wolverine from another timeline and replace the deceased Wolverine we saw in 2017’s ‘Logan’. But his plan finds them both shunted into The Void a sort of apocalyptic desert ruled over by Professor Xavier’s sister played  by Emma Corrin. Deadpool regards this as an opportunity to be Marvel Jesus  and resurrect the franchise and save the day but to say much ore would be to spoil what for the large part is a lot of typically snarky fun with some laugh out loud one liners and a whole load of cameos that are a delight – one especially whose vowel mangling pronunciation is hilarious

The script is rife with jibes at the expense of Disney, Marvel and 20th Century Fox who were gobbled up by the House of Mouse. That Disney has allowed the R rated film to get away with all this is credit to the studio as this is certainly far more profane than the previous films and certainly unsuited for child fans of the other Marvel films with some brutal and bloody moments and scenes of blades stabbing and slashing that sit uneasily when the news is full of stories of child stabbings.

But Deadpool and Wolverine is far better than the second film and in what has been a lacklustre summer for blockbusters this would seem assured of breaking the billion dollar barrier.

Mid & End credit sequence? : Yes
