Author Brett Easton Ellis 1991 novel American Psycho was quite the debut and was controversial in the extreme. An excoriating satire on the 1980’s featuring Patrick Bateman a Manhattan investment banker turned serial killer with some astonishingly stomach churning chapters that sat alongside analytical chapters about seminal albums of the decade such as Huey Lewis and the News’ ‘Hip to be Square. The books violence would seem to make it an unfilmable novel and yet director Mary Harron managed it casting Christian Bale in the lead role (who was quite brilliant in it too and is something of a cosplay favourite) and ending on a somewhat ambiguous end. Well now there’s news of an American Psycho reboot.
Helming the new film will be Luca Guadagnino with the film being adapted by Scott Z Burns whose previous has included The Bourne Ultimatum. Rumours are that that rather than a remake, Guadagnino’s film will be a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel. So it might be as gruesome as the novel especially when the graphic gore of films such as Terrifier 3 have clearly indicated there is an audience for explicit violence. And Guadagnino himself is no stranger to horror after the cannibal horror of Bones and All. The book has been something the studio has been trying to crack for some time, and following recent meetings with the director the studio execs felt he was the perfect choice to bring a fresh take.
Quite who will play the lead in any American Psycho reboot is unknown but as the director has worked so much with Timothee Chalamet our money is on him as being a contender for the role of Bateman. Filming is thought to begin next year
