The Backrooms trailer puzzles us….

Landing in our inbox back in February was the Backrooms poster which was vague but slightly ominous and then the teaser trailer dropped which though initially looked a little banal the voiceover gives it a distinctly uneasy edge. Well now the full Backrooms trailer has dropped and it looks quite something

The Backrooms trailer synopsis…

But the synopsis gives little away beyond saying, ‘A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom’ and then there’s the tag line, ‘You are not supposed to be here’ but then goes on to add, ‘A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom’.

So who is involved with the film and what might it be about?

Directed by Kane Parsons and written by Will Soodik but it’s that the film is produced by James Wan that gives a clue as to what genre this is going to be. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve (both Oscar nominees) and Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett with Lukita Maxwell we are intigued by this lo-fi trailer and more will be revealed over the coming months but please do let us know what you make of it all.

The Backrooms as a concept originated in a 4chan thread in 2019. The thread featured a single still image of empty yellow rooms and read: “If you’re not careful and noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.”
