We are heading towards possible award winner film release season and landing in our inbox is the Golda trailer starring Helen Mirren in a remarkable transformation into the fearsome Israeli leader.
On the world stage of modern day heavyweight female political leaders and before Margaret Thatcher became the UK Prime Minster there was Golda Meir a blunt, to the point and undeniably stubborn Israeli Prime Minister. Faced with Israel’s possible destruction, Meir engages in diplomatic brinkmanship with U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger, played by Liev Schrieber. The film is a ticking-clock thriller recalling true events set during the tense Yom Kippur War in 1973 and was the only woman in the Israeli cabinet becoming a surprisingly effective military leader after her country faced an unexpected twin attack from the Arab powers of Syria and Egypt on the morning of Jewish holiday Yom Kippur in 1973.
The ensemble cast includes Rami Heuberger, Lior Ashkenazi, Ellie Piercy, Ed Stoppard, Rotem Keinan, Dvir Benedek, Dominic Mafham, Ben Caplan, Kit Rakusen and Emma Davies. The film is based on a screenplay by Nicholas Martin who wrote the excellent Meryl Streep film ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’. There would seem to be a raft of possible nominations the film might get including obviously Best Make Up with Mirren’s prosthetics taking over three hours to apply and transforming her in to the renowned Israeli Prime Minister. Having won an Oscar back in 2007 for the W=Queen the Golda trailer sees her return to more heavyweight roles after appearances in Fast X, Shazam Fury of the Gods and the recent Barbie (as the narrator).
The film had its world premiere in Berlin back in February and the film is set for release in the US on August 25th with a UK date set to be confirmed
