Liam Neeson in The Naked Gun? Seems unlikely that he might star in a reboot of the beloved comedy but then until he starred in taken none of us had him down as an action star either and that’s most what he’s been doing for the last ten years. But whilst he has been out promoting The Marksman he revealed that the comedy might be returning with him as Frank Drebin the role that made the much missed Leslie Nielsen a star.
The trilogy of films have had a various efforts at being rebooted, relaunched and /or remade over the years since the last film appeared in 1994. To date the remake has yet to appear but as for Liam Neeson in the Naked Gun the actor said he had ‘been approached by Seth MacFarlane and Paramount Studios to maybe resurrect the Naked Gun films’. Neeson has worked with Seth MacFarlane before when he appeared as the bad guy in ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ and ‘Ted 2’ as well as the TV series The Orville. The thought of Liam Neeson in The Naked Gun was something that would “either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know” admitted the actor.
MacFarlane has gone on record about how much he loves working with the actor ‘fessing up that it would be dream to see Liam Neeson in the Naked Gun remake or a similar style comedy saying that the actor is, “so good at playing against the comedy and therefore he’s hilarious. He just really knows what he’s doing.”
Initially a failed TV series the films were a big hit in their time making $78m, $86m and $51m respectively and turning Leslie Neilsen into a huge comedy star, a genre that he appeared in almost continually until his death in 2010.
