Every actor wants to have appeared in a film with Robert De Niro but now the actor will play in a scene opposite himself when he reunites with director Barry Levinson in mob drama ‘Wise Guys’ a period piece that tells the story of Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, a pair of Italian Americans running two separate crime families during the mid-20th century. Genovese tried and failed to assassinate Costello in 1957, though the latter wound up taking his leave from the mob after being injured during the attempt on his life. De Niro would play both characters, according to sources.
Scripted by Nicholas Pileggi who knows a thing or two about the mob after having written Goodfellas and will be produced by Irwin Winkler (who’s currently battling with Sylvester Stallone over the rights to Rocky). This will be a Warner’s film who are having something of an overhaul in their production slate under new boss David Zaslav who recently shelved Batgirl and is re-examining its DC slate and deciding which movies to green light for cinema release.
DeNiro is no stranger to excellent mob movies with The Godfather Part II. Goodfellas, Casino and The Irishman so hopes and expectations for Wise Guys will be high.
