It’s no secret that James Cameron is a demanding director. Stories abound of him on set and started in earnest on the set of Terminator 2 when the crew started wearing T shirts with the logo, ‘T3 – Not with me!’. But its seems there’s been a Roland Emmerich v James Cameron bust up gone on.
At this years San Diego Comic-Con director Roland Emmerich was asked by Louis Leterrier about the long gestating remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic ‘Fantastic Voyage’ that starred Stephen Boyd and Raquel Welch and focused on a submarine crew getting shrunk down to enter the body of a scientist who suffered a brain injury. Leterrier whose previous includes ‘Fast X’ has said that he would love to direct the film and asked Emmerich about his experience years ago with the project.
Emmerich reply was not one that you might expect saying, ‘“James Cameron is very overbearing, and so I, at one point, just gave up,” leading to laughter from the audience. “Because it’s like, ‘Is it your movie or my movie?’” And then continued saying, ‘“We were in very beginning stages. Because I said, ‘Gosh, why is he so overbearing?’ I have to say, I do my stuff, and when I can’t do my stuff, I’m totally not interested. As simple as that. So when somebody else wants to say something to me and is more powerful than me, I drop out.”
In a 2007 interview Emmerich explained that he dropped out of helming Fantastic Voyage because he was unhappy with the script. Since then several directors have since been circling the project including Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy and Guillermo del Toro and now Louis Leterrier.
Back in April 2024 Cameron said that though the film had been in development for quite some time, he was still hoping to see the film made. But after the Roland Emmerich v James Cameron we cant see any collaboration anytime soon
