The seventh film in the Jurassic franchise has the monstrous Distortus Rex but just how did the film makers come up with such a creature. Here’s the Jurassic World Rebirth D-Rex explained……
The Distortus rex is attempt to genetically engineer a T. rex that went horribly wrong. Early and disastrous attempts to splice DNA fragments other animals were recklessly introduced into the T. rex genome, resulting in a malformed, terrifying mutant. The staggering creature towers at nearly 26 feet tall, 47 feet long and weighs approximately 20,000 pounds.
It has a colossal misshapen head it can barely keep aloft and a hideous roar. Predominantly a quadrupedal creature, it has stiff bloated legs and two additional long arms. Although it has somewhat limited mobility due to its distorted proportions, there is nothing that can stop this massive creature as it destroys everything in its path. “We’ve created this creature that is based on a T. rex but has two additional powerful gorilla-like arms, and extra bloated bulk over the back of its head,” says Vickery, adding that it was his favorite “dinosaur” to make for the film.
Director Gareth Edwards was very involved in the development of the D-Rex, literally throwing his whole body into the work. “We were doing animations tests and showing Gareth a scene in which the Distortus was limping along,” says Vickery. “Gareth looked at it and he was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s really cool,’ and then he got down on the floor and started moving around like a Gorilla, trying to convey how he wanted the dinosaur to move. The whole process was marked by that kind of visceral engagement with Gareth, and we loved his willingness to experiment and his desire to find something new and original at every turn. There’s no line too far for him. When we first met, he said, ‘If you come back to me with 10 different designs of a thing and at least six of them aren’t ridiculous, you haven’t gone far enough.’ He’s not interested in average. He wants you to be fearless, because it’s easier to find brilliance by dialing back from ridiculous than dialing up from mundane.”
