With the pandemic ruining many cinema releases the trucker Liam Neeson actioner saw ‘The Ice Road’ being released straight to DVD which was a shame as it a big screen was an ideal place to see monster trucks driving over ice laden lakes not always with success.
The film came from writer- director Jonathan Hensleigh whose previous films as a writer included ‘Die Hard with a Vengeance’, Jumanji,” “The Saint,” and “Armageddon,” and as a director included the excellent Thomas Jane version of ‘The Punisher’ but The Ice Road had been his first film as a director in ten years. But the film ended up on Netflix and Prime and performed so well that trucker Liam Neeson will return for a sequel titled, “Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky” which switches the location from Northern Canada to Nepal.
This second film will see trucker Liam Neeson return as big-rig ice road driver Mike McCann who, honoring his late brother’s last wish, travels to Nepal to scatter his ashes on Mt. Everest. However while on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, Mike and his mountain guide encounter a group of Nepalese mercenaries. They soon must fight not only to save themselves and the busload of innocent travellers, but also the homeland of the local villagers.
Filming is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024 with a release penned for early 2025
