With that Barbenheimer weekend proving a major event in the summer blockbuster season this year and it being well publicized that Barbie is now likely to be the years biggest film with $1.212b and counting (Super Mario Bros Movie is on $1.355b) but what films box office has Oppenheimer beaten so far?
At time of writing Nolan’s historical drama film has now surpassed the $700 million mark at the global box office after five weeks of release with $285 million domestically and $437 million internationally. So what films box office has Oppenheimer beaten so far……well it has overtaken Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning’s $525m as well as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”s $686 million and now “Fast X”’s $704 million and currently is the fourth-highest-grossing movie of the year. But it could be third if it can pass Marvel’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” at $845 million.
In terms of Nolan’s own films Oppenheimer will quickly pass 2014’s “Interstellar”s $715 million. and might well catch up with “Inception”s $837 million. It’s not going to top Nolan’s two “Dark Knight” films that earned over $1b. However the film is the director’s highest-grossing film release in over fifty overseas markets that includes Germany, India and Brazil. From that $146.4 million come from IMAX premium format’s screens – making it the fifth-highest grossing Imax movie ever behind the two “Avatar” films,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Endgame. It’s little wonder that IMAX love Nolan as much as audiences.
The next question is what will nolan’s next film be and having left Warner Brothers to make the film for Universal will there be a bidding war for whatever he next intends to make?
