Gina Gershon has a whole back catalogue of terrific films and amongst those films that includes ‘Face off’ and ‘Killer Joe’ are the controversial ‘Showgirls’ (1995) and ‘Bound’ (1996).
Bound is a really great thriller that she starred in alongside Jennifer Tilly. Written and directed by the Wachowski’s it saw tough ex-con Corky (Gershon) and her lover Violet (Tilly) concoct a scheme to steal millions of stashed mob money and pin the blame on Violet’s crooked boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantolino). It featured a highly regarded love scene between the two actresses that drew acclaim from the LGB community for its sensitivity rather than sensationalism. And its a really great story too and the Wachowski’s would follow it with their ground breaking film The Matrix.
Showgirls was a very different matter. Helmed by Paul Verhoeven who was hot in Hollywood after a run of box office hits that had included Robocop, Total Recall and Basic Instinct. Typically forthright, the sex and violence in these films were quite something but Showgirls upped the ante when it came to on screen sex scenes and controversy followed with the film running into trouble with the US censors and a TV star, Elizabeth Berkley in her first lead role in a film and suffered catastrophic backlash that effectively stopped her career dead in its tracks for years.
We spoke to Gina Gershon about both films and how she looks on both on them 30 years later. here’s what she told us…..
