Back in 2020 we had news that Sony had hired Evan Daugherty (“Tomb Raider”) to rework the script of the original film but since then it’s all gone quiet with no further developments. Well now there is some Anaconda reboot news…
The 1997 version had Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Jonathan Hyde and Jon Voight (in gloriously over the top form) and who had a spectacularly gross death in the film. The reboot was int ended to be an event movie along the lines of The Meg. But that seems to have pivoted a little to something else.
Daugherty is no longer on the project and instead director Tom Gormican, who helmed the Nicolas Cage meta film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” has now taken over scripting duties. And the Anaconda reboot news is that this new film will also take that meta angle with the original cast playing heightened versions of themselves as they film a new “Anaconda” movie on location ….before it all goes awry when a real anaconda pops up. That’s the intention anyway but at present its not believed that any of the original cast have signed up yet so there’s a strong possibility that this plot line could change again.
It launched a franchise, including one theatrical sequel and three direct-to-home releases of inevitably worsening value but this reboot with a bigger budget could change all that and there’s clearly still a huge fanbase our there for the films….and who doesn’t want to see Jennifer Lopez gobbled up by a giant rampaging snake? (we’re guessing all her ex-husbands will be front of the cinema queue).
