So a short while ago we reported on A Nightmare on Elm Street remake that Paramount were to make under an agreement with Wes Craven’s estate. Well it looks like we may well see Freddy Krueger vs Freddy Krueger face off as Warners are reportedly about to make their Nightmare om Elm Street remake.
Now all this seems to have stemmed from the deal that was made with Craven’s estate which appears to have been for the U.S. rights to Craven’s original 1984 screenplay that Paramount had obtained under copyright law. But the previous rights holder New Line Cinema (now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) had retained the the international rights for the film. SO where does this leave both films?
Well Warners are now looking into making their version of the film which will be written produced and directed by Lee Cronin who had success with his Evil Dead films a few years ago and now his Mummy remake. At present Paramount do not have a director although they do have Craven’s widow Iya Labunka, and son Jonathan Craven producing but confines that film to essentially a shot-by-shot remake that can only be released in the United States and are prohibited from exploiting any merchandise deals. Warners, on the other hand, is not restricted by any such deal. So all of this suggests that Warners may possibly have the edge on getting their film out first and worldwide too.
The original film was released way back in 1984 and made a healthy for the time £25m and a reboot in 2010 made $115m off a $35m budget though it was to far less acclaim and there was never a sequel
