According to the law of diminishing returns sequels traditionally perform worse than their predecessor. The notable exception to this law is undoubtedly the John Wick franchise.  With the first film released in 2014 about the eponymous hitman the modestly budgeted film cost only £20m to make and yet made over four times that at the box office with $86m. John Wick Chapter 2 followed in 2017 and more than doubled the original earnings of the first film with $174m. John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum (2019)  again almost doubled that total this time  making $328m. The franchise gave the Hollywood actioner a boot up the backside and proved that perhaps the best person to helm such films were stuntmen themselves and here its Chad Stahelski, himself an ex-stunt co-ordinator who had worked on films as varied as The Expendables, The Hunger Games, Rambo, Die Hard 4 and 300. It was experience that proved invaluable because having helmed all the films in the franchise with audiences blown away by the gun play and carnage and believing that the film makers couldn’t possibly get any better were proved wrong by each successive film. And in that respect John Wick Chapter 4 is surely has hit the creative peak of on screen carnage with an ability to create utter chaos not seen since that albino bag bin liner of body parts Boris Johnson became Prime Minister.

For fans of action this must rate as one of the high table of heroics with Reeves proving himself as perhaps the premiere action star. Forget Dwayne Johnson and the other pretenders to the throne that Arnie vacated because the John Wick films are on a whole different level with some of the most creative set pieces seen on celluloid that includes a shoot out in the high speed traffic around the Arc de Triomphe, a blistering firearms fight as Wick ascends a huge flight of stairs against an unending number of assassins out to stop him and a Gods eye view of a RPG shoot out in a mansion. Should there be a fifth film it’s difficult to imagine just how they can even match let alone top this fourth film as they have in the past,
