The DC superhero franchise continued with the sequel to the 2019 film and Shazam Fury of the Gods was the last film before the studio had a shake up with James Gunn and Peter Safran heading up the studios DC superheroes franchise.
With the first film establishing the Shazamily the sequel “continues the story of teenage Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. It’s a decent transfer with the colours particularly vibrant and though inevitably several of the features are firmly of the EPK variety the best features of the disc are those led by director David F Sandberg. Having honed his craft on several highly effective short films he made for his internet channel it led to his debut feature Lights Out. Now Sandberg is a very done to Earth Swedish director and has always been very open about how his films right from the early days have been made even pointing out mistakes on his own youtube channel and it’s what makes the scene deconstruction so enjoyable for anyone wanting to know how these big set pieces are made which comprise of so many elements including stunts. CGI, practical effects and more. His openness and willingness to reveal the secrets and even mistakes is what makes the commentary of all his features films ( as well as his early shorts) immensely enjoyable and is what lifts the disc above the average.
Fans will also enjoy the cameos that might have been missed the first time round which includes Sandberg’s wife, Michael Gray who appeared in the 70’s TV show as well as Sandberg’s own cameo where he utters a few lines in Swedish too plus the superhero cameo that was leaked prior to the films’ release. There’s also 32 deleted scenes though none have a director’s commentary but it’s easy to see why they were dropped.
