The crazy things Arnie was made to do on Conan the Barbarian...

Stories of the maddest things that happened on films sets are rife and some directors drive their crew and cast to extremes to get their shot. But Arnold Schwarzenegger new self help book has revealed some mindboggling behind the scenes stories about one of his early films. Its all care of director John Milius and the crazy things Arnie was made to do on Conan the Barbarian.

The 1982 film saw a natural role for muscle mountain Arnie to play and Milius was a notoriously tough and testosterone fuelled director and according to the star made him do ‘terrible s**t’. But probably amongst the crazy things Arnie was made to do on Conan the Barbarian was to bite into a real vulture multiple times for take after take. saying, ‘I bit a real, dead vulture that required I wash my mouth out with alcohol after each take. On one of the first days of filming, I tore a gash on my back that required forty stitches.”

Arnie writes in his book, ‘“I learned to ride horses and camels and elephants. I learned how to jump from large rocks, how to climb and swing from long ropes, how to fall from a height. I basically went to another vocational school, this one for aspiring action heroes.”

Milius then had him doing more insane stuff.  ‘I crawled through rocks, take after take, until my forearms bled. I ran from wild dogs that managed to catch me and pull me into a thorn bush,” said the star.

In fairness it didn’t put him off returning to the role for the sequel Conan the Destroyer although Miluis didn’t direct that film.
