The Coen brothers, Joel & Ethan,  have such an impressive back catalogue of films starting with their fantastic debut ‘Blood Simple’ (read our review of the excellent Directors Cut of the film HERE) but news is out about the Coen Brothers retiring from film making.

Their last cinema film was 2016’s Hail Caesar! but their next film ‘The Tragedy Of Macbeth’ (which is scheduled to make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in September as the opening night film) for the first time only has Joel Coen credited as for the film with no sign of brother Ethan and the question has obviously been raised as to why that is. The answer comes from their composer Carter Burwell and the bottom line is that Ethan has simply lost interest in making movies. Further still Carter suggests that Joel might well leave films behind him too….

Ethan just didn’t want to make movies anymore. Ethan seems to be very happy doing what he’s doing, and I’m not sure what Joel will do after [Macbeth].”

Coen Brothers retiring - Are the brothers about to step away from films?

In fairness the Coen Brothers retiring was hinted at by Ethan Coen almost two years when he told a journalist that he planned to “give movies a rest” to focus instead on playwriting. Whether the turn to the world of stage is permanent is unknown as Burwell has said that the brothers have “a ton of scripts they’ve written together that are sitting on various shelves”. However none are in any stage of development. Burwell went on to say…..

I hope maybe they get back to some of those because I’ve read some, and they’re great. But I don’t know. We’re all at an age where we could retire, but I don’t think that’s exactly what’s going to happen. It’s a wonderfully unpredictable business.

Maybe they’re following Tarantino’s lead who has vowed to make only one more film.
