In The Shadows is the latest film by double Emmy and triple BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated director Anthony Wonke.
Based on the truly inspirational story of Ramla Ali, a Somali refugee who, without her family’s knowledge, became the first Somali British boxing champion. Not solely a boxing movie, IN THE SHADOWS is a story of determination, passion, self-discovery and self-belief. It is a coming-of-age film that champions universal themes of identity, belonging, family, love and faith: a deeply human journey where a young woman learns how to open the door to her future and find acceptance from her family and community.
Ramla Ali went on to make history as the first non-track and field athlete to compete for Somalia in the Olympic Games, and strived to find her own identity in spite of the world she was born into.
BAFTA-winning, Jasmine Jobson (Jaq, Bird, Top Boy) plays the lead role of Ramla Ali, with Finn Cole (Sirius, Last Breath, Peaky Blinders) supporting as her husband, Richard Moore, and Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (The Man in My Basement, The Gentlemen, Andor) as Clinton, Ramla’s coach. Other key Somali cast playing Ali’s family include Hodan Yusuf, newcomer Suhayla Ahmed, Roda Asha Aden, Mustafa Aden, Moe Hashim, and Samater Ahmed.
IN THE SHADOWS WILL HAVE ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL ON FRIDAY 9TH OCTOBER and WILL BE RELEASED IN CINEMAS ACROSS THE UK ON 30TH OCTOBER 2026
