So whilst we reported HERE about a Dracula film that’s already wrapped there’s news of another film of the fanged fiend with news of a Nicholas Cage Dracula film. It’s a bit of a shock as he recently admitted that he is done with Hollywood studio films and yet this is exactly what he’s now signed up for with this Universal film
Titled ‘Renfield’ it will star Nicholas Hoult in the title role as the Counts henchman and the film will be directed by Chris McKay who was behind The Lego Batman Movie. Described as a modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone (well it does star Nicholas Cage so what else could it be if he goes full on bonkers as he has in his past twenty years of films). In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, Renfield is a patient in an asylum obsessed with drinking blood, deluded into thinking he will find immortality and worships Dracula, who, coerces him by feeding him insects and rats in return for everlasting life.
Ryan Ridley has written the screenplay based on an original story outline.
Cage has made his fair share of blockbusters and has an Oscar plus a second nomination for 2002’s Adaptation but made his last major studio movie in 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, before he turned to starring in art house and independent films. This Nicholas Cage Dracula film may be something of a comeback for him as the yet to be released The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Cage plays an actor named Nic Cage who is trying to navigate the paths of indie and studio moviemaking while also acting as a CIA informant ensconced in a drug lord’s jungle compound has had good word from test screenings before its April 2022 release and we’re as keen to see it as anyone
