With the game debuting in 1996 film studios saw a game to film adaptation possibility and three Tomb Raider films, starting in 2001 with Angelina Jolie then another in 2003 before it had a reboot with a Alicia Vikander in 2018. The films earned $274m, $160m and $274m respectively but any further films seem to have fizzled out. So what is the future of the Tomb Raider franchise?
A sequel was mooted to be directed by Misha Green and previous to that director Ben Wheatley had been involved too with a release date even having been set for March 2021 but the pandemic put an end to that ever happening.
With the 2018 having been made by MGM it appears that they have now lost the rights to make furthers films which have returned to GK Films where bids were received but since then it has escalated into a full on bidding war! All this has boiled down to MGM having been bought by Amazon and the studios and streamers having a voracious appetite for known and established intellectual properties and rumours are that the bidding war is proving frenzied.
One thing that has been confirmed is that Alicia Vikander will no longer be playing the role.
