What’s happened to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy?

Dividing opinion was The Last Jedi (read our review HERE) the second part of the most recent Star Wars trilogy back in 2017 and he took a fair bit of flack from rabid fans but recently said,…..“When I was up at bat, I really swung at the ball.  I think it’s impossible for any of us to approach ‘Star Wars’ without thinking about it as a myth that we were raised with, and how that myth, that story, baked itself into us and affected us. The ultimate intent was not to strip away — the intent was to get to the basic, fundamental power of myth. And ultimately I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the myth of ‘Star Wars’ in our lives.” At the time of the release of The Last Jedi there was talk of  director Rian Johnson’s star wars trilogy when revealed that he was developing a new trilogy for the franchise but all has been quiet since.

But all is not lost apparently with the director saying, ‘ I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it,” Johnson said about his new “Star Wars” trilogy, five years after it was first announced. “It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”

Forwarding to 2019 he told the British press that he was looking beyond the legacy characters to develop new ones but again all went quiet when it came to further news of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy. In fairness his all-star whodunit Knives Out did great box office and was Oscar nominated too and two sequels were greenlit the first of which we will see in December on Netflix. But with a new franchise will he have time to make a new Star Wars trilogy.

Here’s Rian Johnson introducing The Last Jedi at the London premiere……(apologies for the quality!)
