Anyone who had the misfortune to see 1993’s live action Super Mario Bros is probably only now coming out of therapy and Nintendo understandably became highly protective of their gaming properties. It’s only now that fans of the game can breathe a sigh of relief with the release of a new, and this time animated, Super Mario bros trailer.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on the excellent Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The quality of the animation is high as might be expected from Illumination and from what we can see here expectations should be met be gamers with the trailer sticking adhering to the personalities featured in the long running game franchise. So from we see here we’re very much looking forward to this wiping away residual memories of what we saw in 1993.
The film is released in UK cinemas on 31st March 2023
